This devastating masterpiece by Toni Morrison is one of my favourite books and I couldn’t resist designing a cover for it.
It’s the story of Pecola, a black girl driven mad by the perceptions of beauty in 1940s America. Pecola is the sillouette here, overwhelmed by the looming eye of beauty.
The image is by Robert Childress who illustrated the Dick and Jane children's books which are referred to throughout The Bluest Eye. I added the halftone effect to enforce the idea that preconceptions of beauty are false and perpetuated by the media.
